The 2018 Blake Jones Trout Derby is set for Saturday, March 17th in Bishop. It’s Saint Patrick’s Day, so everyone is sure to have great luck. Since 1968, the Blake Jones Trout Derby has been a favorite event in the Eastern Sierra. “We did have to skip 2017 due to unprecedented winter snowfall and extreme runoff conditions, but we're back on track and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever,” explains April Leeson, derby coordinator.
Every year, nearly $10,000 worth of cash and prizes are awarded including float tubes, rods & reels, gift certificates to local shops and restaurants and much, much more!
New for 2018...check-in, weigh-in, and awards ceremony will be at Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds in downtown Bishop. Fishing locations are the same as always - Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Owens River.
"Since it is the 50th anniversary, we wanted to enhance the derby by offering information booths, educational displays, kids' casting games, activities and entertainment," explains Leeson. The fairgrounds is the perfect venue and it's close to downtown hotels and restaurants. For those who don't want to drive to and from Pleasant Valley, a free shuttle bus will run continuously all day between the reservoir and the fairgrounds.
The Blake Jones derby is a blind bogey format with categories for adults and kids of all ages. In addition to the blind bogey awards, there will be prizes for early bird registrations, farthest travel, biggest fish, even prizes for those who don't catch any fish or choose to catch & release. There will be special drawings for a brand new Dave Scadden inflatable kayak, a beautiful quilt made from previous years' Blake Jones T-Shirts and themed basket raffles.
Registration is now open. You can sign up online at www.bishopvisitor.com or drop by the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, 690 North Main Street.
The Blake Jones Trout Derby is co-sponsored by Inyo County and the City of Bishop, plus many other generous prize sponsors. For more information, contact the Bishop Chamber at (760)873-8405.
